Ian McKnight has worked predominantly in the field of property law for over 40 years. For the majority of that time he has specialised in the areas of
body corporate and strata law, providing advice to clients in relation to the governance and administration of strata schemes, general advice concerning
strata meetings and procedures, and representation in strata litigation. He is also experienced in the areas of strata subdivision, consolidation and
redevelopment and has successfully managed a number of high value collective sale arrangements on behalf of clients.
One of the keys to Ian's success is the unique combination of skills and experience he has gained over his career. Having owned and directed a strata management company and having a strata manager's licence himself, Ian's insight and knowledge of both the commercial aspects and the legislation in this area is second to none. Appreciating the complexity and individuality of each strata scheme, Ian is able to quickly and effectively identify any issues as they arise and how best to resolve them for clients.
His experience and reputation within the field resulted in Ian being called upon to provide advice to the NSW Government and Clover Moore MP on strata law reform and any resulting implications.
Over the course of his career Ian has been recognised for his ability to resolve disputes in a variety of ways. He is a skilled mediator and dispute resolution practitioner, utilising his legal knowledge and commercial acumen to resolve numerous strata and building and construction disputes. When required he is also a tenacious and experienced litigator who has represented clients in all relevant Courts and Tribunals.
Ian has written many papers on Strata law and is the author of the Strata Law chapter, in New South Wales Court Forms and Precedents (LexisNexis). He is also regularly called upon to present at strata management industry events and contribute to industry publications, as well as delivering Continuing Legal Education and Continuing Professional Development papers and lectures at the Law Society, University of New South Wales, Legalwise, SCA and Owners Corporation Network.
In recognition of his experience and achievements, Ian was presented with the President's Award at the annual convention of Strata Community Australia (NSW) in 2015.
